THOUGHTS ABOUT AGING
By Maggie Penman
Negative stereotypes about aging [envelhecimento] are pervasive. A global survey in 2024 found that 65 percent of health-care workers and 80 percent of the general population falsely believed that developing dementia is a normal part of aging.
“The stereotype of an older person is that they’re dependent, that they have cognitive impairment,” said Dr. Mark Lachs, a renowned geriatrics expert. While Lachs said that may sometimes be true, “the vast majority of older people don’t have any cognitive impairment. The vast majority of older people do not have a need for assistance.”
In the last couple of decades, there has been more research focused on the positive aspects of getting older. Lachs noted that judgment and wisdom improve with age, as does emotional intelligence and even happiness.
Moreover, in a major new study, researchers looked at data from thousands of people over 65 and saw that improving with age wasn’t the exception. It was almost as common as decline.
Part of the reason for the disconnect between the stereotypes and the reality, experts said, is much of the research on older people looks at average outcomes instead of individual outcomes, or looks exclusively for decline or for the absence of decline, instead of the possibility of improvement.

In paragraph 2, the phrase 'While Lachs said that may sometimes be true,' most likely refers to which of the following?
- Alternativa A: An older person's age-related health problems may not be controllable.
- Alternativa B, a correta: A certain age-related stereotype can at times be valid.Resposta
- Alternativa C: Being dependent doesn't automatically lead to cognitive impairment.
- Alternativa D: Cognitive impairment doesn't automatically make an older person dependent.
- Alternativa E: Popular wisdom can at times be a valid substitute for science.
O que a questão pede:
A que se refere o "that" em "While Lachs said that may sometimes be true" (embora Lachs tenha dito que isso às vezes pode ser verdade).
Onde está no texto:
A frase anterior é a citação de Lachs: "The stereotype of an older person is that they're dependent, that they have cognitive impairment." O "that" retoma esse estereótipo. Logo depois vem a ressalva: a grande maioria dos idosos não tem comprometimento cognitivo nem precisa de ajuda.
Por que é a letra B:
"Um certo estereótipo ligado à idade pode, às vezes, ser válido." "Certain age-related stereotype" é o estereótipo do idoso dependente e com comprometimento cognitivo; "can at times be valid" traduz "may sometimes be true".
A armadilha:
C e D usam as duas palavras do estereótipo ("dependent", "cognitive impairment"), o que dá a impressão de estarem ligadas ao trecho. Mas acrescentam uma relação de causa que não existe no texto.
