DIVINE CHAT
A pastor’s job is to lead congregants to a closer relationship with the divine. With Christmas approaching, many are writing sermons they hope will do just that. Yet surveys show that Americans’ trust in clergy has hit a record low. More people now pray in their cars than in churches.
Perhaps inevitably, tech bros [os empresários de TI] in Silicon Valley are taking the wheel. “Text with Jesus,” an app built with OpenAI’s Chat GPT, allows users to pose personal and theological questions. Represented by an avatar with a well-trimmed hipster beard, the virtual Jesus responds with friendly nudges [provocações] and quotes from scripture. “I hear you sister, honest doubt matters and you’re not alone in it,” he responds to an admission of skepticism about the resurrection. The app suggests selecting a denomination and offers a range of biblical figures and apostles to consult. For gentle advice consider Mary; for a more combative, even controversial, conversation, perhaps Cain or Judas.
The app has about 150,000 users and is popular in big American cities like New York, but also in Mexico and across South America. It too has doubters. AI Jesus is too concerned “with providing answers palatable to the eager ears of 21st-century users,” wrote James Spencer of the Christian Post, a news website. He reckons the bot barely resembles biblical Jesus – to his horror, he writes, it wouldn’t unequivocally affirm that Jesus is God. Stéphane Peter, the app’s French-born founder, admits that his own mother thinks his innovation is blasphemous.
Pope Leo has cautioned Catholics against reading wisdom into aggregated data. Expect other faith leaders to follow. Elon Musk once warned that “with artificial intelligence we are summoning the demon.” At least for now the Satan feature on “Text with Jesus” isn’t on by default – it has to be enabled in the settings and is only available to subscribers.

Which of the following is most likely one reason that James Spencer disapproves of the 'Text with Jesus' app?
- Alternativa A: As it becomes increasingly popular, it will tend to make Christian pastors irrelevant.
- Alternativa B: Its AI Jesus tells users only what they want to hear, not what they should hear.
- Alternativa C: Its sole purpose is to generate profits for sophisticated Silicon Valley entrepreneurs.
- Alternativa D, a correta: It presents a virtual Jesus that has little to do with Jesus as He is presented in the Bible.Resposta
- Alternativa E: Even the app founder's own mother has criticized 'Text with Jesus' as an offense against God.
Etapa 1. Isolando o que é de Spencer:
O artigo lhe dedica três informações, todas no terceiro parágrafo:
Etapa 2. A correspondência com a alternativa D:
| Texto | Alternativa D |
|---|---|
| "barely resembles biblical Jesus" | "has little to do with Jesus as He is presented in the Bible" |
A alternativa B afirma: "Its AI Jesus tells users only what they want to hear, not what they should hear". Ela se apoia em "answers palatable to the eager ears of 21st-century users", respostas agradáveis aos ouvidos ávidos dos usuários do século XXI.
Dois problemas a derrubam:
| Problema | Detalhe |
|---|---|
| O quantificador | O texto diz que o bot é "too concerned with" (preocupado demais com) respostas palatáveis. A alternativa converte isso em "only what they want to hear", um absoluto que o texto não afirma. |
| A hierarquia | "Palatável demais" é, para Spencer, o sintoma; a doença é o afastamento do Jesus bíblico. O artigo enuncia a conclusão dele explicitamente: "he reckons the bot barely resembles biblical Jesus". |
Etapa 4. Descartando as demais:
| Alternativa | Por que não |
|---|---|
| A, tornaria pastores irrelevantes | O artigo levanta a crise do clero por conta própria, no primeiro parágrafo. Não é uma objeção atribuída a Spencer. |
| E, a mãe do fundador criticou | Isso é dito por Stéphane Peter, o fundador, sobre a própria mãe: "admits that his own mother thinks his innovation is blasphemous". Nada tem a ver com Spencer. |
A) Incorreta.
B) Incorreta. Apoia-se em "palatable to the eager ears", mas exagera com "only" e apresenta o sintoma em lugar da conclusão que o próprio artigo atribui a Spencer.
C) Incorreta.
D) Correta. "He reckons the bot barely resembles biblical Jesus" corresponde diretamente a um Jesus virtual que pouco tem a ver com o Jesus da Bíblia.
E) Incorreta.
Conferindo a alternativa:
Spencer conclui que o bot "barely resembles biblical Jesus", exatamente o que a alternativa afirma, alternativa D.
