NEWS EXTORTION IS PREVALENT IN CHINA

  1. In May 2026 Chinese authorities revealed that three men in Zhejiang, an eastern province, had been sentenced for a curious crime known as "news extortion." They had dug up [descoberto] (or in many cases made up [inventado]) dirt [informações difamatórias] on over 180 companies that were preparing to go public [abrir o capital] and then demanded hush money [suborno para comprar o silêncio] to not publish it on social media. What was most concerning [preocupante], said prosecutors, was that some companies did not report the extortion to the police, even though the information that the men threatened to publish was not true. Instead, they just paid up to avoid disruptions to the listing process. One firm sent 50,000 yuan (US$7,000) to make the problem go away; another, 30,000 yuan.
  1. In some cases, depending on when the hush money was paid, the damaging news items never even appeared; in other cases, they were in fact published on social media only to vanish shortly thereafter for no apparent reason.
  1. Meanwhile, the government has been blaming rogue [desonestos] journalists for the problem of "news extortion." But it is often China's own strict controls over its media that lead to corrupt behavior, writes David Bandurski of China Media Project, a research group, in a recent blog post. The essential job of Chinese state-media journalists is often to create "positive energy" with their stories so as to flatter and praise the government. That encourages unethical practices. And getting rid of unwelcome news reports attracts little scrutiny in China because, thanks to an army of government censors, stories disappear all the time without an explanation.

Resolução do Jazz

Etapa 1. O trecho decisivo: os três homens "demanded hush money to not publish it on social media" (exigiam dinheiro pelo silêncio para não publicar as informações nas redes sociais) e "some companies did not report the extortion to the police [...] Instead, they just paid up to avoid disruptions to the listing process.

Resposta: alternativa C.
